As I went through the process of selecting plays for this season,
I could not stop thinking about the current political, economic, and
environmental issues that impact our life today.
At its best, live theatre mirrors the human condition and reflects the
conflicts, traumas, struggles, and, ultimately, the triumphs that
punctuate our lives.
More than ever, we need the performing arts — not only as a means of
exploring the tremendous conflicts we face, but also as a means of
celebrating our capacity to come together and overcome these conflicts.
In each of the plays this season you will meet characters that are
struggling to overcome enormous emotional and physical obstacles,
from the amazing story of Helen Keller to the electrifying rock musical Tommy,
and from the story of two brothers struggling to come to grips with a
middle-age —and each other!—to the story of a family as
fragile as the horn of a glass unicorn,
to the coming of age story in Biloxi Blues, the characters exemplify
the human ability to persevere.
